A Step-by-Step Guide to Replacing Window Blinds

Window blinds are an item in the home that may need to be replaced every few years, especially if you have purchased the cheaper ones that bend and eventually break. Luckily, they are very easy to replace on your own and can make the window look much more attractive than ratty, broken window blinds. For this project you will need a measuring tape, a step ladder, a screw driver.

Measuring for Blinds

You will need to start by taking accurate measurements. You should measure at the top, middle and bottom of the window across to get three separate measurements for width. You need three measurements in order to determine what the narrowest width across is. If mounting blinds on the inside of the window then this is the measurement you will use. This is true even if the narrowest portion of the window is not at the top where you will be mounting them. If you purchase blinds to fit at the top and the bottom is narrower, the blinds will not hang correctly. If you are mounting blinds on the outside of the window you will take measurements allowing for an inch or two on both sides of the window.

Shopping for Blinds

Now that you have your measurements, it is time to go shopping. You may want to choose basswood or bamboo blinds to get longer use out of them rather than the cheaper aluminium ones. Wooden blinds come in a large range of colours. All our blinds are made-to-measure and will be delivered and installed once manufacture is complete. There is no need for any additional purchase, all our blinds are supplied with fixtures and fittings.

Removing the Old Blinds

Pull the blinds all the way up so they are gathered at the top, this will make it easier to carry them down once they are detached. Using a step ladder, climb up and see how the old blinds are hung. You will probably see the mounting hardware on each end with a front square of the bracket that should slide right out. After this is removed the blinds should slide right out. Other blinds are latched into the brackets on the top of the window frame and can be detached by wedging a screwdriver between the top of the blinds and the top of the hardware and prying them loose. After removing the old blinds, unscrew the mounting hardware with your screwdriver unless you can reuse it for the new blinds. There should only be a couple of screws

Hanging New Blinds

New hardware can be mounted on either the inside or outside of the window frame, depending on where you have decided to hang the blinds, using the screwdriver and stepladder once again. The new blinds can be easily hung by inserting the blinds either into the mounting hardware or the brackets. Pull the cord to release the blinds down and try them out to ensure they are working correctly.
